Title: Evening June 29 2008 and TC is Down
Post by: RandallS on June 29, 2008, 08:33:36 pm
The Cauldron's message board appears to be down as of 8:15pm CT June 29th. It may be back up soon or it may be down awhile as our Server Admin is in the middle of a cross-country move and may not notice the problem for a while. If the main board is down, feel free to post here on our Backup board.

Remember, it does not know anything about your account on the main board. If you have never registered on the backup board, you will need to successfully register there before you can post. Please register with the same id you use on the main board if at all possible.

This board is on a free server and does not have all the custom features of our regular board and does have ads for all. Also, discussions here cannot be moved back to the main board. But at least we can talk with each other. ;)

We apologize for the main board problem and hope to have it corrected ASAP.

Is there any major weather happening where the server is?  This doesn't happen at TC very often.

It doesn't appear to be. Of course, Bob isn't in the same state as the server any more. At least I assume he got his wife and kids packed up and they are on their way northeast by now -- he was working on packing last week.

I know the feeling.  Gramma's not doing so well, Mom's on a trip and not doing so well, and the Cauldron is down.  When it rains, it pours!

*crosses fingers that everyone (including the boards) are feeling better soon*

Having withdrawal symptoms here. I didn't realise how often I sneaked in for a quick peek during the day - I was beginning to wonder if the IT dept had blocked it!

Doom and gloom board?

Yep.  The reason I started looking for a new board to hang out at and ended up here.

There is a liberal politics board(Democratic Underground) that I used to dwell at that had at least 5 "OMG THE WURLD IS GONNA END" type posts a day.  Anyhow, one day not so long ago they had a really bad day where they had about 25 real stinker threads about how we shouldn't bother to get lunch because the looting and burning will hit the burger king before anyone can make it down to the elevator.

I decided that day that that board was a little too unhealthy and panicy(not saying that the world is peachy keen, just not the cesspool of horror and pain they paint it to be) and the rest is history.

Don't worry, though.  I won't start ranting unless you start talking about employment in the US(I did a lot of research for the board in regards to creating a more accurate picture of employment in the US based upon various government figures, including regional pictures of who has what jobs in what industry, how many people are actually not working, percentile classes defined by yearly income, etc.,etc, I'll spare you the dull stuff).

That's definitely too much (very unrealistic) doom and gloom for me. My version of doom and gloom is the old Johnny Carson joke. "World ending at 10pm. Film at 11pm."

It was.  I was on it often enough that it actually diminished my mental health slightly.  That much mental ick.

Gotta think of a good topic for the backup forum.  Maybe secondary spirituality?

I just have to say, I am so grateful there is a back-up board! When I tried to log on to TC main board last night and it wouldn't let me I figured it was my computer. Hubby told me that the board was probably down, and looks like he was right!

Also very glad this board has pretty much the same features as the other, because I was dreading having to learn things anew and get it all drastically wrong  :D

That's why I picked this free system as our backup. It's close enoufgh to the real board to not be too confusing.

I'm doing ok.  I'm working on a HUGE text(3 volumes, 1169 pages total) for a teaching the Dalai Lama is giving on the 10th of July and it is rather dense, to say the least.  Hoping to get it all done by the teaching.  My primary and her husband are having arguments back and forth about stuff.

Well, I get my chores done in a timely manner. My mom board is on World Crossing, and it goes down fairly often-we have a much better backup board on phpbb, but we argue a lot about moving permanently, b/c we can post lots of pictures on world crossing, and we don't have to use quote/reply. I have been on that board for 10+ years, and see or talk to some of them IRL from time to time, so I know how painful this is for some of you cauldronites when TC goes down ! I don't post more than 4 or so times a day most days on TC, but I read there a *lot, and I would guess I am there at least an hour every day. But I do notice that when both TC and St. Jane's (my mom board is named after Jane Nelson, the Positive Discipline lady) are both down, I get ever so much done, especially now, when I'm not working...I'm off to reorganize the camping boxes, go to yoga and take the kids swimming...

An HP Pavillion. Like... I guess dv6000 series? If that's the right info? Meh.

3 GB instead of the semi-standard 2. That's the only "technical" info I know for sure; my stepdad helped me pick out things from the techy pov. Other than that, it's got a super nice wide screen (important for editing photos like I do!). And it's got a sweet teeny tiny remote that pops out of the side to control music, DVDs, etc. from afar. Cool! :) $629, which I didn't think was too bad!

What I love most about it though is that I *bought* it, on my own, and it didn't wipe out my bank account in the least. Just like I bought my car all on my own last year and how I've always paid my entire way for college. Now I just need to have the money to actually move out, and I'll really feel proud of myself. ha!

Out of curiosity, how old is the laptop?  If it's more than about 6 months old (AND it didn't overheat when you first got it), you need to clean the fans (and probably the heatsink).  Most laptops have access panels on the bottom that you can open up to get to the fan(s).  Just open these panels, give the insides a good general dusting with an air duster, and then spray directly into the ventilation grilles to try to dislodge some more of the built-up gunk.  You'd be amazed how much dust can build up in a laptop.

As a phone support technician, I always tell my customers that once every three months is a pretty good time-frame for cleaning their notebooks, and once a year is the absolute longest they should even think of going.  So, if it's been a while since you bought/cleaned the system, give it a shot.  You might just find the jet engine quieting down  ;D

I will give that a try!  Thanks for the advice.

Be warned that you might be pulling enough dust to fluff up a large kitten out of your computer's guts.  ;D

Depending on environment, even 1 year can be enough to clog a laptop's heatsinks and fans to the point of death (granted, the computer I'm thinking of was in what I would consider an incredibly hostile environment: a chain-smoker's house).  In a good environment, it can last without a cleaning for quite some time, but it makes your fans have to work that much harder in order to be that much less effective.

Yeah, it really is sometimes! :) Yet I can't complain about living at home; there's no real restrictions. And if they helped pay for my school I could move out. But doing all that on my own doesn't leave a whole lot of room for anything else.

But I'll get there, eventually!

I've been wondering about this with my own kids. It is so much harder to go out on your own, these days, it seems, and I know a lot of young people who are choosing to live with their parents b/c it's a better alternative to being on your own and really struggling financially. I moved out when I was 18, and to another state when I was 21, with practically nothing, but it seems like in most areas that isn't even possible anymore. I'd be happy to have my kids at home, when they are older. I think in many ways it's better for us humans  to live in family groups, at every age.

If I wasn't going to school, I think I could move out fairly easily. The degree thing puts a wrench in it though; and I commute to save $$$. If I could move in with my boyfriend, together the two of us could afford a place, but he doesn't want to move out my way too much (and I don't want to leave school!) so that's on hold for now too.

Living at home has had few negative things about it though. My worst problem is the dogs (can't stand dogs in the house barking!), so that's fine. lol. And it's just me, my mom, and stepdad so things are pretty laid back. If I had brothers and sisters I might not want to be here as much. *shrug* They give me food, shelter, and running water... I'm on my own for the rest. Not a bad deal at all.

I read an article a while back about "urban tribes." Essentially how young people in their 20s band together in groups of friends to live together so they can afford it and generally help each other out. This happens mostly in big cities where rent and everything is soooo expensive. I think it is getting harder to do *anything* (get a job, move out, get a car) as a young person anymore.

well, we were doing that a lot when I was in my 20s too-I think it is partly just a developmental thing of that age. But I also believe there is a general movement towards more communal living, b/c of costs, conservation and so on.
