Starbucks Corp. said Tuesday that it had drastically increased the number of stores it plans to close and could eliminate as many as 12,000 full- and part-time positions as a result. The company said it now plans to close 600 company-operated stores in the United States, up from its previous plans to close 100 stores.

We have three in my town, one in each major chain grocery store.  I don't really like their coffee, it always tastes burnt. Meh.

I don't even drink coffee. What bothers me is closing 600 stores and laying off 12,000 people means that the management GREATLY over-expanded in recent years.  Said management should get a huge in in their wages and benefits for their stupid decisions.  But they are probably already somewhere else or will get pay and benefits raise from the stock price jump the higher profits will cause -- after all these stores are closed and people fired. Management wins no matter what. This is bad for business in the long term.

Agreed.  My city is the hometown of Beaners -ooops, I mean Biggby- coffee, so if I'm craving something fancy I go there.  Usually I just make my own.

Not even middle management, upper management.  ALl those little managers are going to lose their jobs too.

I figure we have at least 4 in town.

I've noticed this trend with other companies too.  Borders, for instance.  Big expansions in the main stores, instead of common sense business practices (no maintenance in smaller stores, reducing stock, cutting benefits).  Upper management gets perks, all peons are just that - peons.

Lowe's has been having the same problem.  Home Depot too, from what I hear.  It isn't about the long run, its the short run with the shareholders that matter.  How much money can they squeeze from their rock before it runs dry. Undecided

I'm glad someone out there shares my opinion of starbucks coffee.  It tastes like it's been sitting on the burner for a day.  Unless you get a flavored coffee then it's not bad.

I dunno, their carmel macciatos are pretty gross too.  How can you screw up something with carmel in it?!

That's exactly what I thought when I read the story.  I don't go to Starbucks in general (and I don't think I've even been to a coffee shop since college...I prefer my wife's chai and custom tea blends), but when you live in the sticks like I do and can STILL get to 3 different Starbucks with a less-than-15-minute drive, it's a pretty good sign they've overexpanded just a tick.  Especially considering that what most people around here think of as a "coffee shop" is going to McDonalds.  Cheesy

Friends don't let friends go to Starbucks, as we say hereabouts, in Coffee Land. However, I have found that when I am in a place where there is no good coffee (ie, visiting my ILs in Lubbock, TX) getting a large americano is a good facsimile for a real cuppa.

I don't know about where rose lives, but around here, it's Free-Trade organic coffees from indie, locally owned coffee-houses.

It depends. You can go here if coffee is your religion
http://www.bluebottlecoffee.net/

Or, if you are more secular in your approach, you might go here
http://www.peets.com/who_we_are/who_we_are.asp

And certainly there are plenty of Starbucks around, for the uninitiated.
