BAD NEWS: It looks like Bob's server just died again. Board's down and while I connect via ssh, nothing actually happens (I never get a login). Outgoing email still hasn't been set up on the new server. Bob has been swamped at work -- it happens. The last good database backup I have from the current server is from October 2. GOOD NEWS: I finally found a how-to that purports to give a set of directions for setting up Postfix outbound only for web software to send email -- so I can try to set up email myself. (I've been looking for something like this since we got the server!) The first thing that has to be done is change the reverse DNS and WAIT for it to propagate (24-72 hours). I changed it when I read this how-to last night. Once that change propagates, I can try the Postfix setup and see if it works. Once outgoing email works, we can actually start some type of move.

So the board will probably be down for a few days?

I can't say. Perhaps Bob's server can be brought back up. I don't know. Bob is at work.

It is. Mail is working. I'll wait to see if Bob's server comes back up as I would really like to get a current copy of the messages instead of one from October 2. Assuming it does come back up, (when I am home, this is a busy week for me) I'll put the board on Bob's Sever in maintenance mode. Copy the DB, update the new board and then change the DNS. As the DNS change works it way around the net, people will begin to see the new board. No firm ETA on this as my schedule is packed this week and we have to wait for news on Bob's server.

Okay...I think I understood most of that. What does DNS stand for?

Domain Name System. It's what translates the " www.ecauldron.net in the numerical IP address assigned to a specific server. www.ecauldron.net is currently pointing to Bob's machine. When the new server is ready, it will have to be changed to point to it. That changes can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days to make it from the master doman name servers to the servers your Internet provider uses, depending on how your ISP is set up to handle DNS.

So the forum as it is now (or as it was on the 2nd) will just move over to the new board and things will look the same? It won't be a blank board starting all over again? Will we each have to re-register on the new board? ~FierFlye (is computer-knowledge limited)

Worst case We lose everything back to the 2nd (so six days worth of posts, any new sigs since the 2nd etc) Accounts will be much the same, So we shouldn't need to re-register

::fingers crossed:: As far as I know, that is the worst likely case. I can imagine some much worse cases, but they are very unlikely.

Did I register before or after Oct 2nd? If I registered before the 2nd then would I have to re-register?

Before If I registered before the 2nd then would I have to re-register? No. If we use the October 2nd database, people who registered late in the day October 2nd or after would have to re-register.
